Amanda's surgery

When I saw those tears flowing from Amanda's eye, I immediately knew that she needed a new cornea. Her vision had started to deteriorate after the infection and second round of rejection. Alvin and I both knew it but we were in self denial. I kept praying and hoped for a miracle to happen.

I was on leave on Monday, 26/4/10 as I had planned to go shopping with Maureen. Instead, I cancelled my shopping date and I brought Amanda to see Dr Seah. He confirmed that a cornea transplant is needed. So Amanda was put on the waitlist for a donor cornea and surgery was scheduled for 25 May 2010 @ 6.30am. We have been told to be on standby from 18/5/10.

Well, at least this time round Amanda was more calm (she had a nervous breakdown the last time). I guess having been through this before she knew what to expect. The Sunday before, I bought her an advance birthday present; a pair of citrine earrings. It was like a gift of encouragement and love from me.

I texted Ms Chong, Amanda's Form Teacher and Mrs Hang, the Resource Teacher to keep them and the school informed. I also texted Ms Dewi, her piano teacher.

E-bay

I've finally created an account with e-bay. Last Friday, I helped Margaret to sell her old fridge & washing machine at $60. There were 3 potential buyers but in the end, I sold it to an Indian buyer who was willing to take both items. Margaret was so happy that I helped her get rid of them. In fact, the "garang guni" man wanted her to pay him to bring the stuff down to the rubbish dump!

Today, I've sold Alvin's Aibi Inversion Table to an expat for S$600.00! The equipment has become a white elephant as Alvin hadn't used it for some time. So he was glad that I sold it and he had some spare cash on hand!

Matt helped to explain and demonstrated how to use the Aibi Inversion Table to the expat. Alvin and I were pleased to see that Matt could speak confidently to a stranger. Matt could be a potential salesman!

Now that I have successfully sold items on e-bay, my next target is to help sell my mum's old stuff.

AI School Achievement Day

Amanda was so excited. She has been chosen as one of the 3 emcees for her School's Achievement Day. She memorised her speech and rehearsed it many times. I was her critic, and I recorded and played back her speech for her to listen.

I am so happy for her, and that she was given this opportunity to speak in front of the whole school. Amanda didn't win any prizes this year; missed being top for English by a mark. However, the emcee role was just as important and a great achievement for her. It will definitely help build up her confidence and public speaking skills.

School of Science & Technology - Direct School Admission

School of Science & Technology (SST) is a new Independent School. Their focus is on Science and Technology. The Parents' Seminar was a good and very informative. I liked that it is a 4 years programme. They follow the same syllabus as the main stream school, and the students will sit for the O level exams after the fourth year. Classroom size is 25 max, and the learning is focussed on hands-on and outdoor teaching. Each student will need to buy their own Macbook. Thus, the number of text books will be reduced. The downside is that the school fees will be about $300 per month. A hefty sum compared to the normal school fees of $13 per month. However, I am convinced that this is the school for Matt. His strengths are Maths and Science and he needs to be in a environment where everybody is motivated to learn.

Well, first thing to do is to register Matt for the placement test. If he passes the placement test he will need to go to a "boot camp". After he had passed the "boot camp" test, he will be offered a place at SST. One other criteria is that he needs to score a minimum of 200 points for the PSLE exams. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Finally it's over!

Finally, the exams are over! With a blink of an eye one year has passed, and I have completed the paralegal course. The results were: 2 Bs for Computer Systems Application and Managing People (HRM) and C for Law of Tort. Thank God, I made it!

The occasion calls for a celebration with the family at Sake Sushi. At the office, my boss was so kind. She bought me (Mano was invited)lunch at MOF, Suntec.
